The Making of the Ekaya Saree

The Design
Every Ekaya saree begins long before the loom. It starts with an idea, a mood, a concept, or a story we want to tell through the weave. We research deeply, build colour stories, and moodboard inspirations that shape the identity of each collection.

The Concept
Once the concept is clear, our design team begins sketching motifs. These are first drawn by hand and then developed digitally. This is the stage where imagination takes form as shapes, lines, and patterns.

The Naksha (Blueprint)
The chosen design is carefully translated onto a life-size graph called naksha. Much like an architectural plan, every motif is mapped to scale, preparing it for the loom.

The Jacquard Code
From the naksha, the design is punched into jacquard cards – cardboard strips that act like secret codes for the loom, telling each thread how to move.

The Yarns
We source the purest silk yarns for strength and sheen. Colours are hand-dyed using traditional techniques and layered for depth and luminosity. Each shade is carefully forecasted to feel both modern and timeless.

The Loom Setup
Once the yarns are ready, they are carefully mounted onto the loom. The warp threads are stretched and aligned with precision, while the jacquard cards are fixed in place, ready to guide the movement of each thread. This setup is the foundation of the weave.

The Weave
The weaving begins as the warp and weft yarns interlace under the guidance of the Jacquard cards. Thread by thread, the saree slowly takes shape—a process that can take weeks, sometimes even months.

The Unveiling
Once complete, the saree is cut from the loom. For the first time, its motifs, textures, and colours are revealed in their entirety, and the sacred moment of seeing an Ekaya original comes to life.

The Finish
Every saree undergoes meticulous finishing. Loose threads are trimmed, the surface perfected, and every detail inspected. Only when it meets our highest standards does it become an Ekaya saree.

From Our Hands to Yours
An Ekaya saree is not just a piece of fabric. It is a journey of concept, research, artistry, and heritage, carried from the hands of our artisans to yours.
